With the VR180 Camera, Lenovo aims to simplify the process of creating VR content. The inspiration behind the design was the desire to make VR photos and videos immersive yet straightforward to create. The camera allows users to share their experiences in a completely new way, from vacations to live events, by posting and sharing VR180 video on YouTube. It even supports live broadcasting in stereoscopic VR180 via YouTube, inviting viewers to join in the fun in real time.
What sets the Lenovo VR180 Camera apart from other VR devices is its ease of use and the high-quality content it produces. This point-and-shoot stereoscopic camera allows users to create their own VR content in real-life depth in 4K quality. Optimized for YouTube’s VR180 standard, the camera transitions seamlessly to a VR experience when viewed with Cardboard, Daydream, and PSVR. This feature also supports live-streaming videos through YouTube, in VR, making it a unique tool for content creators.
The VR180 Camera is manufactured using injection molding to provide the best price-performance for users. Through fine-tuning the manufacturing processes, Lenovo has managed to lower the cost, making the VR experience more accessible to a wider audience. The camera's compact dimensions (Width 105mm x Depth 22mm x Height 55mm) further enhance its user-friendly design.
The VR180 Camera project began in September 2016 in Beijing and was completed by the end of 2017. The Experience Design Group at Lenovo was the driving force behind the design, with the aim of making VR content creation more approachable. The result is a device that is not only easy to use but also produces high-quality, immersive content.
The VR180 Camera's innovative design and functionality have not gone unnoticed in the design world. In 2018, it was awarded the Golden A' Digital and Electronic Device Design Award, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. These venerated products and bright ideas advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
